Zack
Nite II
October
29th 2005 - we are staging our Second Annual
Zack Nite. This years event promises to be
even better than last
years gala event. This year we are honouring Mike
Delaney.
Don't
miss this year's event! You
can buy tickets online!
There
will be lots to see and do ... memorabilia
displays, DOCA Hats & T's for sale, a 50/50
Draw and you'll want to roam the school from
the 6:00 pm opening 'til we close.
We have another supurb menu that's catered by Innocenti.
(Even more delicious than last year!) And, a cash bar of course!
This
year's entertainment is:
- YOUR
DOCA ENSEMBLE!
(Yes, this is the inaugral performance of the De
La Salle Oakland Crusaders Alumni Ensemble. Don't miss
this!)

you are plannng to attend and want to help
us the day of the event call me - 416.253.6509

ya there!
WOW!!!
On
October the 23rd we held the First
Annual ZACK NITE!
Over
200 people showed up at the school. Fun was
had, stories told, tears shed, food and drinks
consumed and memories, old acquaintances and
friendships were shared. It was a BLAST! Quite
literally overwhelming. Every era of the corps
was in attendance!
CADRE
and the DCAT Choir performed marvelously. Folks
made their way around the school and checked
out old photos and a favourite haunt was The
Gym!
"Man
I remember it being so much bigger!" I
heard many say! I also heard - "Hey
didn't you have hair ... and a waist?" But
I digress!
First,
before we go any farther - I just want to acknowledge
the folks who put this together and worked
their butts off for the last couple of months.
Thanks go to:

have done it without you.
We
have great pictures from the night.
Thanks
to everyone who came out, helped and made this
an event that will be talked about for years
to come!
We
are also planning a pre-Christmas, gala Third
Thursday. It will be on December 16th at Innocenti.

Lots
of Activity
We
are planning a number of great events.
The
first and most exciting is on October 23rd.
It is our first annual celebration of Brother
Xavier. There is no shortage of great stories
and memories of Bro X and how he mentored,
helped, motivated and inspired us all. When
people hear about this celebration their first
reaction is to recall a great memory and no
doubt a great story.
Zack Nite promises
to be a very exciting and fabulous evening. It will take
place at De
La Salle Oaklands - the school where it all
started. And there will be entertainment (more to come on
that), prizes, draws and much, much more.
We
are also planning a pre-Christmas, gala Third
Thursday. It will be on November 18th at Innocenti.
There will be more details later.

Time
to Join
The De
La Salle Oakland Crusaders Alumni has
been formed and it is time for you to join.
There
is a form you
can download, complete and mail in. It is $25
a year and that contribution will help the
organization grow, send out newsletters, organize
social events and contact folks who are not
online through regular mail. And there are
a lot of folks we need to contact that don't
have internet access.
If
you want to stay in touch there is also an
online form that
you can complete and send in electronically.
We will add you to our distribution list for
upcoming events - like Third Thursday - or
other social events.
Order
your DOCA T-Shirt Today!
There
has been a lot of work and background activities
- so stay tuned. More to come!
It's Formal
Over the last number of months a few of us have
been meeting to formalize the Alumni Association.
There will be a soft launch in the coming months
and more formal announcements, but suffice to
say, we are alive and well and have a formal
organization.
The De
La Salle Oakland Crusaders Alumni has
been formed.
We will be contacting the folks that we have
on our database as a result of the Third
Thursday gatherings, but now want to hear
from all of those folks who should be involved.
Here is
a form to submit, and there will be an
application form posted soon. We have temporary
logo designs that we are choosing for a final
and there has been a set of By-laws and a Constitution.
And a lot of other stuff ...
As I mentioned there will be a formal announcement
- and a soft launch proposed for November the
8th. But I don't want to steal anyone's thunder
- so sign up and we will get the news to you
as soon as possible. Or get to the next Third
Thursday and join!

How
this started ...
Several
months ago I was at Tony Cappizano's restaurant Innocenti with
an old friend, Bill Gragnoli and we somehow ended
up talking about some of the Del alumni who have
died.
I got pissed off about the fact that it seemed that I now only see friends
that I grew up with at funerals! This hit me like a brick, and in that instance
I promised to make sure that I stay connected to these special people I grew
up with and to do something about it.
Since early this year we have been getting together on the Third Thursday of
every month at Tony's and this gathering of alumni and friends has prompted
this site.
There is virtually nothing online dedicated to one of the most dynamic drumcorps
Canada ever produced.
Although this is called the De la Salle Drum Corps site it is open to everyone
who was involved in this great pastime. I believed that this bit of history
spanning the 40's through til the 80's needed to be chronicled.
No matter what corps you marched with or when you played, you are welcomed
to contribute and enjoy, Also if you were simply an enthusiastic fan we urge
you to contribute.

Been
almost a year ...
It was almost a year ago that the
Third Thursday idea was initiated. Since then
we have been able to connect with over 70 people
- most of whom have attended our gatherings and
all have contributed in one way or another to
this site.
The site, which was launched in December has received approximately 2 million
hits and has generated about 55,000 unique visits.
And all of the feedback has been positive for the most
part. The only area that has been voiced is the Del/Crusaders
issue. My only intent was to house
a site for an era. An era from the early 1900s til the mid 80s.
Full stop.
I happened to have marched in Del 66 - 71 - I instructed Crusaders and a couple
of other corps for a short time. Hence, I have no particular bias, simply where
I am anchored in a place and time. A Crusader's site would be wonderful, and
I would be happy to place it here, but my connections with the folks of that
era are slim - at best.
So if you want to get something going drop me a line. And as always all submissions
are welcomed.

Pretty
Interesting Phenomena
I am constantly amazed at the
power of the human voice. This Internet thing
is all about that. The
Cluetrain Manifesto spells it all out.
For over a year now this endeavor - which has taken on a life of its own -
has been happening all around the world. I receive messages from all over
the US, Europe and Asia.
We gather physically on the Third Thursday of
each month and in between yak back and forth on email. The important thing
is that the history is being celebrated by each of us who either marched in
Del, Crusaders or some of the other wonderful Canadian corps and share the
experiences of the past. I sit back and watch all the participants and am happy
to offer this conduit.
We
have thousands of folks visiting the site, downloading
MP3s, photos and tid bits. I have to point out,
that although this is the Delasalle site, it
is not limited to the group that marched under
that name. This is really about drumcorps. The
friends, the travel, the competition and as I
have seen almost every day since we started this
- how it changed us.
In the next few months we will be creating a document that tells about this
period of rich Canadian history. It literally involves thousands of folks.
It touched all of our lives and still does.
If you have information, want to get involved or simply want to say hi you
can drop me a line, show up on the
Third Thursdays if you are in Toronto or pass along this site address to
someone you know who would be interested.
Stay
in touch - it is great to hear from you.

Moving
Forward ...
The
De La Salle Oaklands Crusaders Drum Corps Alumni
Association
It
has been over two years that this endeavor has
been up and running. In fact, it has caused some
interesting activities.
First, the Third Thursdays are alive and well and we are seeing new faces at
each gathering - that is so cool!
Also, we have put together a team of folks to steer us to a formalization of
this group.
The proposed entity is the The
De La Salle Oaklands Crusaders Drum Corps Alumni Association
In an effort to galvanize and gather all of the folks
who marched with the different iterations of the corps
- from the Blue & Gold to the Crusaders
(and everything in between) we are making sure that this initiative includes
- instructors, members, family and supporters.
What we have done so far is start a database program to contact members, a
mission statement and direction, proposed activities and an interim Board of
Directors.
Once we get our preverbal "ducks in a row" we
will be actively seeking members and support.
We will be contacting you shortly with announcements.
Stay
in touch - it is great to hear from you.
